A hamster is a nocturnal mammal. It belongs to the rodent family. Rodent families are classified by their one, continuously, long growing, set of incisor teeth. Other examples is a mouse or a squirrel.  "Rodent" come from the Latin word 'rodere', meaning 'to gnaw'. In order for a hamster to keep its continuously growing teeth trimmed, "gnawing" is exactly what it has to do.

Hamsters eat a variety of food.  The word "hamster" comes from the German word 'Hamstern' meaning 'to hoard'. Hamsters hoard their food. They have specially designed cheek pouches to carry their food or bedding material from place to place.  Hamsters remove the contents of their cheek pouches by simply stroking their cheeks to remove the contents within.
